Step 1 - Get the New Mexico Name Change Petition and completely fill it in but do not sign because you will have to sign this form in front of a public notary.  Step 2 - File your forms with the County you are located (See Courts Below). Pay the $117.00 filing fee.  Step 3 - Proceed to the Judge's office and request a hearing within 30 days. You will need to make this request in writing with the New Mexico Name Change Request form.  Step 4 - You will be instructed to publish your new name in the newspaper to run for 2 consecutive weeks with the ad appearing at least once per 7 days. The clerk should put you in contact with the best newspaper for your area. Upon completion the newspaper will provide a 'Proof of Publication' which lets the court know you in fact made your new name public notice.  Step 5 - Appear at your court hearing where the Judge will grant you your Order for Name Change. This will be your official certificate for changing your name at any public or private institution. !
